Cole Porter, another master of the American musical, is the only composer and lyricist represented on John Barrowman's new solo recording, John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter. Porter's always elegant music and lyrics are given suitably elegant arrangements and orchestrations by Larry Blank. This is a classy album of classic theatre songs delivered with polish and sheen by Barrowman along with the Pro Arte Orchestra of London.
This Glasgow born Scotsman began singing in his formative years in his mother's record shop, and moved with his family to Illinois, USA, when he was eight years old. While in high school at Joliet West High he began acting and has since starred on the West End, on Broadway, on British and American television, and film. Most recently he reprised the role of Billy Crocker in Trevor Nunn's successful 2003 West End revival of Porter's ANYTHING GOES. As he does on stage, Barrowman gives his all to each of the 14 songs. With such a tremendous catalogue of songs from which to choose one had hoped for some less recorded songs. All but 3 songs are frequently included in nearly every recording of songs from Porter's prodigious pen. The 3 that might be less familiar to most listeners are "I Happen to Like New York, Ca C'est l'Amour" and "After You, Who?"
Still, well-known Porter is a surprising treat when compared to what are often considered good theatre songs from today's musicals. The recording is nicely produced; however, the sound could have been better balanced had the orchestra been less forward. It sometimes sounds as if Mr. Barrowman is supporting the orchestra as he delivers 100% on every track.
John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter is the type of classic "swing" recording rarely produced today. It's got style, wit, elegance, sensuality and romance. So grab your honey, turn down the lights and listen to Barrowman swing Porter. It's sure easy to love.
